Year 2000

Preparing for Year 2000

1ptrans.gif (44 bytes)
DDL Systems Year 2000 project team is continuing to work diligently to ensure that our computer systems—and those of our business partners—will continue to operate smoothly when 1999 becomes 2000. Below are some commonly asked questions about the Year 2000 issue and steps DDL Systems has taken to address customer concerns.

We will continue to update this web site with additional Year 2000 related information as we approach the immovable deadline of January 1, 2000. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THIS WEB SITE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" BASIS FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY.  IN ADDITION, ALL WARRANTIES ARE HEREBY EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

If you would like a DDL Systems representative to contact you regarding this matter, please enter your contact information in our customer feedback form or send e-mail to sales@ddlsystems.com. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

What is the Year 2000 challenge?
The Year 2000 issue has arisen since many computer programs throughout the world use two digits instead of four to identify the year and assume the next century to be 1900. If these programs are not modified, they will not be able to correctly handle the century change when the year changes from "99" to "00" on January 1, 2000, and they will no longer be able to perform necessary functions. The Year 2000 issue affects all companies and organizations.

What is DDL Systems' definition of a Year 2000 ready product?
DDL Systems has adopted the IBM definition for Year 2000 ready products. IBM considers a product Year 2000 ready if "the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it. Please note, IBM products identified as Year 2000 ready may require user intervention, such as the application of Program Temporary Fixes (PTF's) or Corrective Service Deliveries (CSD's) before the Year 2000 occurs, or for PCs, restarting the system after the Year 2000 occurs."

Information provided by DDL Systems regarding the Year 2000 ready status of software applies to DDL Systems' products only. For any third party products, please consult directly with the product developer for information about whether their products are Year 2000 ready. DDL is not in a position to independently verify, or accept any responsibility for, the accuracy or completeness of such information.

How has DDL Systems addressed the challenge?
All Year 2000 compliance changes to DDL Systems' internal computer systems and programs were completed in August 1998. As an extra effort, additional tests of our internal business systems are being conducted in 1999 and regularly monitored to ensure compliance.

DDL Systems is working with its vendors to assess the adequacy of their own compliance efforts and we are developing contingency plans to assure that any noncompliance on their part will not materially affect DDL Systems' internal operations.

Which DDL Systems' products are Year 2000 ready?
All Year 2000 compliance changes to DDL Systems IBM iSeries® System Management products ACO PAGER™, ACO NET™, and ACO Enterprise System Interface™ were completed in August 1997. However, we currently perform regularly scheduled Year 2000 test scripts and we will continue to monitor the results as the Year 2000 approaches. The millennium date compliance is implemented as follows:

Millennium Date Compliance

  • Database fields have been expanded to accommodate a one (1) position century field.
  • Date processing routines have been rewritten to support date conversions with century using the IBM CVTDAT command, as well as, date conversion API's.
  • User interface remains a two (2) position display/entry of year values.

Key facts:

  • Availability:  Immediate.
  • Products: ACO PAGER™ Version 2.2.14 or higher, ACO ESI™ Version 1.0.03 or higher, ACO NET™ Version 1.0.00 or higher.
  • Platform:  iSeries® CISC or RISC machine running OS/400® V3R2M0 or higher.
  • Support:  All customers will be notified immediately of any Year 2000 Program Temporary Fix (PTF), however, a SupportLine contract is required to actually receive program fixes. Customers are solely responsible for the installation and implementation of any PTF(s) or other related Year 2000 modification(s) required for a DDL Systems product to be considered Year 2000 ready. DDL Systems shall not in any way be responsible for the customers failure to apply such correction(s).

Is this a hardware problem or a software problem or both?
It is a software problem affecting applications, operating systems, and utilities. But it also involves hardware—some computers cannot work properly with dates beyond 1999 and must be replaced. DDL Systems is currently running an IBM RISC based iSeries server. All hardware and software systems running on this system are Year 2000 ready. All personal computers have been replaced with new IBM models running Windows/98 and NT that are also Year 2000 ready.

Hardware Requirements

Requires one standard iSeries V.24 SDLC communications line and one ECS (or Hayes® compatible) modem (or a properly configured SMTP e-mail connection to the Internet). Works with all alphanumeric and  two-way pagers, properly equipped cellular phones, smartphones, pda's, palmtops, and all numeric pagers.

Software Requirements

ACO PAGER™, ACO NET™, ACO ESI™, and ACO CLIENT™ execute on iSeries® systems (all models) running  OS/400 Version 5 Release 2 (or higher). ACO Client™ requires WebSphere® Application Server v5.0 (or higher), WebSphere® Application Server - Express, or any Java 1.3 compliant web application server like Apache. ACO ESI™ requires an enterprise system application like IBM Tivoli® or BMC Patrol Enterprise Manager®. Your Enterprise System may require the use of WebSphere® MQ middleware (V5.1 or higher). This software is available from IBM at an additional fee and is not included in the purchase of the ACO ESI™ software product. ACO ESI™ optionally monitors your network connected Windows servers using a Windows compliant software agent. This software is available (at a nominal fee) from one of our business partners.
