Hardware Installation

As a service to you, our SupportLine will test your pager, cellular phone, or pda and send you the correct set up of the Work with Pagers information. E-mail the following information to support@ddlsystems.com or fax it to (866) 559-0800:

  • The name and phone number of your paging (or cellular phone) service provider.
  • The modem access number that is used to dial the services computers directly (if known).
  • The personal identification number of your pager, cellular phone, or pda. For cellular phones and pda's this is usually a 10 digit phone number that is associated with your device.

US Robotics 56k External Modem Settings

Note: If you received a US Robotics 56k modem with your evaluation package the modem was pre-configured by our staff before being sent to you. Proceed with step 4 below.

ACO PAGER™ can use virtually any 100% Hayes compatible asynchronous modem. These modems have a set of internal software configuration parameters which must be set according to the specification below before they can be used with your IBM iSeries.

Internal Software Configuration Switches

The internal configuration settings on the modem can be set using any PC based communications package; however, we suggest using HyperTerminal in Windows. Perform the following steps to configure your modem:

1.  Attach the modem cable to your personal computer and the modem's serial port.

2.  Start HyperTerminal and press the Connect icon at the top of the dialog box. Enter the following command within the main dialog box to configure the modem:

AT &F1&D2&S1&C1&M4&W0

Note: Some modems do not support the &M4 parameter. If you receive an error in response to entering the above command on your modem, eliminate this parameter and try entering the command again.

3.  If the modem responds with OK, disconnect the modem from the PC and end HyperTerminal.

4.  Attach the modem to the iSeries Electronic Customer Support line (or any other available SDLC line), connect the telephone line, and make sure the modem is powered on.

5. Proceed with Testing the Installation section.

Testing the Installation (Approximately 5 minutes)

Verify your software and hardware installation by proceeding with the steps below.

A. Send an Impromptu Message

To validate the installation, you will change the default pager id (*DFT) to match your paging service contact information and then send a test message to this pager by performing the following steps:

As a service to you, our SupportLine will test your pager (or cellular phone) and send you the correct set up of the Work with Pagers information. E-mail the following information to support@ddlsystems.com or fax it to (866) 559-0800:

  • The name and phone number of your paging service provider.
  • The modem access number that is used to dial the paging service computers directly (if known).
  • The personal identification number of your pager (or cellular phone).

1.  Select the Work with Pagers option from the configuration menu by entering a 3 in the selection field, then press <Enter>. You will be shown the Work with Pagers panel 1 (below).

Note:  The software is shipped with the pre-defined *DFT pager id which you will change in the next step to match your paging service contact information.

2.  Enter a 2 in the option field next to the *DFT pager id on the list panel and press <Enter>. A second panel will appear like the one shown below.

Click here to review the paging service provider contact information and enter the appropriate parameters into the panel above.

Enter the (Work with Pagers) information provided to you by our SupportLine. If you have not received this information call our SupportLine at (866) 559-0800 option 2 or send e-mail to support@ddlsystems.com.

3.  Use the <TAB> key to advance to the service phone number field and type the phone number of your paging service’s computer. If you are calling out of a PBX, remember to include the 9, or other outside access code, before the phone number.

4.  Use the <TAB> key to advance to the pin number field and type the personal identification number associated with your pager (if required by your paging service). Most alphanumeric pagers use a 7 digit pin number, whereas, most cellular devices use your 10 digit phone number as the pin number.

5.  Use the <TAB> key to advance to the pager type field and press <F4> to view the pager type selection window. Identify the appropriate pager type that defines the communications protocol your paging service uses, select it by entering action code 1, and press <Enter> to return to panel 2. Most pagers support type 2 or 5 (TAP). Refer to the paging service provider table for specific information.

6.  Leave the remainder of the fields on panel 2 blank and press <Enter> to advance to the next panel (not shown). Press <Enter> again and you will be returned to list panel 1.

7.  On list panel 1, enter a 10 (Send page) in the option field next to the ‘*DFT’ pager id and press <Enter>. The ACO Page Command panel appears (not shown). If you are using a numeric only pager, enter the number you want to appear on the pager’s display in the message number field. If you are using an alphanumeric pager, enter the text you want to appear on the pager’s display in the message text field. Once you have entered the information, press <Enter>.

Note:  In a few moments you should hear the modem connecting with your paging service. If you don't, perform the following steps to troubleshoot common problems:

STEP 1:  Use the Work Configuration Status (WRKCFGSTS) and/or the Work with Hardware Resources (WRKHDWRSC) commands to verify the line resource id on the ACOPAGER line description. Change the resource id if necessary.

STEP 2:  Reset the factory settings and external switches (if applicable) on your modem to make sure the modem's settings are not preventing you from making a connection. Refer to the Hardware Installation section in this guide or your modem's manual for more information.

STEP 3:  When the modem initiates the dialing sequence, listen for a dial tone, followed by the tone dialing beeps. When these occur, they ensure you've entered the phone number correctly and the local phone line is responding properly. If you are calling out of a PBX, remember to include the 9, or other applicable outside access code in the phone number field for this pager id.

STEP 4:  If there is no dial tone, check the modem and phone line by attaching an ordinary phone to the modem (in the jack marked to phone). When you pick up the phone you should hear a dial tone. If you still don't hear a dial tone, replace the phone cable that is plugged into the to line phone jack. Try dialing the paging service using the handset plugged into the back of the modem to see if you can make a connection. You should hear the ringing of the phone on the other end and a sharp whistling sound once the remote modem answers. If you do, the remote line is responding properly.

STEP 5:  If one of the steps above has corrected the problem, repeat this section starting with step 7. Make sure the previously submitted ACOPAGE job is no longer running in the ACOPAGER subsystem. If it is, cancel the job.

8.  If no errors occurred once the modem completes the request, your pager should receive the message within a few minutes. The time it takes for you to receive pager messages is dependent on your pager type and paging service.

If you have trouble receiving pager messages and you feel you have completed the steps above successfully, call our SupportLine at (866) 559-0800 option 2 or send e-mail to support@ddlsystems.com.

9.  Press <F3> twice to return to the main menu.

10.  You have completed the setup and testing of your modem hardware. Now, continue with step B. Monitoring the QSYSOPR Message Queue.
